nabim engages with Government on fortification

In early January, nabim organised a visit to Whitworth Bros Wellingborough mill for Defra and Department of Health officials including Defra's Deputy Director for Food Standards & Consumers.

The focus of what has proved to be a very fruitful visit, was to increase the officials' understanding of the wheat milling process and particularly how and at what point flour is being fortified on a large commercial scale.

This was an opportunity to catch-up on the folic acid consultation timings, answer technical questions and informally discuss with officials possible nutritional and regulatory challenges when considering the issues around fortification more widely.

We understand the government is still in the process of drafting a consultation response and that the wider issue of fortified flour compliance with the EU market is being considered at the same time.
