Home : The UK Flour Milling Industry

The UK currently has some 31 companies operating 59 mills. The two largest companies account for approximately 50% of production in the UK. A further 20 companies produce significant quantities of flour contributing to a very competitive, commercial environment.

The UK flour milling industry uses over 5.6 million tonnes of wheat each year and is the largest single user of domestic wheat. nabim has worked hard to promote the benefits to growers and millers alike of increased availability of UK breadmaking wheats; as a consequence, up to 83% of the industry’s wheat supply now comes from the UK, more than double the proportion used in the 1970s.

The quality and safety of both raw materials and end product is paramount to the industry. nabim is a strong supporter of initiatives, like the Assured Combinable Crops Scheme (ACCS), to retain and enhance consumer confidence in the food supply chain. Equally, flour millers are committed to the health and safety of their workforce as well as their education and training.

The industry is compact and highly efficient; its total turnover from all sources is a little under £1billion per annum. The UK is self-sufficient in flour with a small positive trade balance. Virtually all UK milling companies are members of nabim.
