Heavy Metals

Crops grow in an open environment and extract nutrients from the soil.  Therefore they are a rich source of minerals and micronutrients in our diet.  However, legislation sets maximum levels for some heavy metals (such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead) to ensure that tolerable intake levels established by public health authorities are not exceeded.  These are checked by the Food Standards Agency, but the industry maintains its own monitoring programme so that any emerging problems can be identified and addressed immediately.  There is no history of problems associated with grain.
